Ancient grave discovered in Istanbul

A Roman-Byzantine grave was unearthed in Istanbul in the Istiklal Avenue. The grave contained a 1,600- to 1800-year-old skull and was discovered 8 metres under the surface.

The discovery was made during the restoration of the historic Casa Garibaldi building that is located along the avenue, a very popular place in the capital of Turkey. Excavations conducted by the Istanbul Archaeology Museum resulted in discovery of a late Roman or early Byzantine grave that stretches along the avenue.

The graves are believed to have been established between 4th and 6th cent AD. The first discovered skeleton has been taken to the Istanbul Archaeology Museum, but the remaining skeletons have been left in the ground.
