Remains of a pottery workshop discovered

A discovery indicating the presence of a pottery workshop was made by archaeologists in Złotoryja (South-western Poland) after construction workers found a layer of pottery shards while laying new pipelines. At first it was thought that an abandoned storage space was discovered but archaeologist Mariusz Łesiuk, who investigated the dig, found out that the find is a waste pit in which broken pottery was thrown by the workers of a nearby pottery workshop dated to 15th century.

Among the shards of vases, plates and bowls numerous clay balls were found, that were used by potters to check the temperature of the furnace. The Late Medieval find is located by the present Garncarska street (Pottery street) which had the same name in Medieval times. The local Heritage Office decided that a part of the site will stay undisturbed for future studies.
