Unknown tunnel found near a castle in Poland

Maintenance workers cutting down a tree near the Książ castle in Wałbrzych (South-western Poland) opened a hole in the ground revealing an unknown tunnel with walls built with bricks. The works were conducted with a use of a digger and consisted of cutting down a tree and levelling the terrain. Upon removal of the roots the opening in the ground was made and the castle officials were called to the site.

Close investigation revealed that a previously unknown tunnel was found with a 4m deep chamber in the place of the opening. Initial study through this new  further revealed that the corridor splits in two directions and ends with a pile of rubble where the tunnel collapsed.

In one part of the wall iron hooks are present in the vaulting which might suggest that the tunnel served as a place for storage – like an underground refrigerator. It is known that very nearby a so called “ice-tower” stood until being demolished by the German Nazis who stationed at the castle during World War II since 1941.
