Early-6th century burials found in Pembrokeshire

Excavations led by Dyfed Archaeological Trust at St Patrick’s Chapel at Whitesands Bay, St Davids in Wales revealed Christian burial sites dated from early-6th Century. These are the times of St. David, patron of Wales and the individuals  that were discovered in the burials are believed to be his contemporaries.  The discovery was made during the third and final excavation at St Patrick’s Chapel. Since the first dig, the remains of almost 100 skeletons have been excavated.

Research by the University of Sheffield on skeletons from similar sites in Pembrokeshire revealed that some of the people buried in them were not local but came from Ireland and continental Europe. The excavation was carried out to avoid archaeological layers being lost to the sea, after winter storms in 2014 exposed graves.
