10th century relief discovered in southern India

Archaeological investigation in Chinnaariyapatti village, Tamil Nadu province in southern India, ended in discovery of a sculpture dated to the 10th century AD. The sculpture contains the image of Ayyanar, a folk deity and an inscription in ancient Tamil writing.

The ancient art piece measures 85 metres in hight and 100 metres in width. The main scene depicts the god Ayyanar with four other deities at the corners. The sculpture contains three lines of inscriptions informing that it was created by Devanen Vetkovar, when Rasasinga Pallavarai was in power as the local administrator of the region in the 10th century AD.
