Hillsborough Castle grounds reveal a Medieval burial

Archaeologists conducting excavations on the grounds of the Hillsborough Castle in County Down, Northern Ireland, discovered a human skeleton. The burial is suspected to be about 1000 years old. The excavations were conducted prior to construction of a major redevelopment project. The skeleton was discovered about two hours into the first day of excavations.

The human remains are thought to be that of a young woman. The skeleton will be removed for further tests that will confirm the gender and age. A a well-preserved skeleton of this age was an unusual find in Northern Ireland. The archaeologists are hoping to find the walls of a medieval church on the site, dated to 15th or 16th Century.
