Follow-up to the sarcophagus discovery by Police in Turkey

Shortly after one sarcophagus was found  by the Police within an illegal dig in Hisardere near Iznik, Bursa province, North-west Turkey, a second one was discovered.

Excavations carried out at the site by Iznik Directorate of Museums revealed a Late Roman Era sarcophagus, dated to the 3rd century. It bears images of Eros wrapped in lotus flowers, and lion head reliefs. The experts say that these motifs have never before been seen in the region. Both sarcophagus will be transferred to the Iznik Museum for display.
