Trove of 200-year old immigrants’ personal belongings

A trove of artefacts was discovered in Boston, north-eastern USA, during excavations at Old North Church. Archaeologists have found items revealing a snapshot of English, Irish, Jewish and Italian immigrant life in the second half of 19th century.

The objects were discovered in an area used as a a toilet or for waste disposal, called a privy. Among the artefacts ceramic pottery, wooden clothespins, animal bones, religious figurines, medicine bottles, toys, and a clay tobacco pipe were discovered. The pipe is ornamented with an Irish shamrock design. The artefacts are dated to the mid- to late 1800s.
