The island was a major commercial hub between 5th-1st centuries BC, bustling with people and trade, linked with the existence of the sanctuary of the Greek gods. The archaeologists of the French Archaeological School at Athens and Greece’s Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities conducted underwater excavations at the ancient shipwreck site.

The ship proved to contain relics of the Greek-Roman period. In the vicinity of the wreckage, a little further North, building remains, including about twenty fragments of columns and pillars, were found. The relics seem to be public buildings and port infrastructure.
