Chest filled with relics of saints and 18th-century prints found

A niche on the attic at the former archive, located within the vicarage of the female Benedictine monastery in Lubomierz, south-western Poland. The find is said to hold remains of over 300 saints.

The chest contained bone fragments of nearly 300 saints. It was stored at the attic for nearly 70 years. Among the saints whose relics were found are apostles Peter, Philip, Jacob, Bartholomew, Thaddaeus, Matthew and Matthias, as well as saints, including Mary Magdalene, Benedict and Jutta von Liebenthal, the foundress of Benedictine nunnery in Lubomierz in 1278.

Other finds include old prints, among which is the 1738 missal Missale Romanum, missal with depictions of a burial ritual from 1727, a 1792 book of prayers for catholic youth, and a document signed in 1893 by pope Leo XII. Some of the prints still await identification and translation from Latin and German by the experts.

The relics have been exhibited in a newly set up 2,5-metres-high reliquary in one of the chapels of the parish church in Lubomierz. It contains remains of nearly 300 different saints, most of them in original, signed reliquaries.
