Third Reich weather station unearthed in Arctic

The Nazi weather station called Schatzgraber, or “Treasure Hunter” was re-discovered on Alexandra Land island located in Russian Federation’s Arkhangelsk Oblast,  less than 700 miles from the North pole.

Expedition to the site located at the Russian Arctic National Park recovered around 500 artefacts at the site, including pieces of military uniforms, ammunition, household objects, meteorological equipment, and Nazi swastikas.

The station was operated by the Nazis from 1942, transmitting regular meteorological reports. It was evacuated in 1944 after the personnel was struck by an outbreak of illness after some ate polar bear meat. The station was destroyed by the Russian Army in the 1950s.

No records remain as to why the Nazis called the station Schatzgraber and whether  they were looking for treasure of any kind. At present no hints remain as to what sort of ancient relics or precious items they hoped to find or if they found anything in the Arctic environment.

The findings were transported to Arkhangelsk for further analysis. Now the experts will try to unravel the mystery of this abandoned Nazi Arctic weather station.
