Archaeologists discovered a cistern during excavations of the ancient city of Dara, Mardin province, south-eastern Turkey. The cistern was found in a field used as a barn.

The structure is dated to the 6th century AD. The Roman city of Dara is located under modern village houses. As excavations continue in Dara, artefacts from the Roman and Persian eras come to light. The newly found cistern measures 18 meters in depth and 15 meters in width. The structure was filled with earth but the archaeologist managed to clear it.
