Viking and Bronze Age artefacts sent to museum by anonymous

The National Museum of Ireland recently received four items sent anonymously in letters without a post-mark addressed to the “History Museum”. The artefacts are dated to Bronze Age and Viking Age.

The items include two Bronze-Age axes – one dating from about 2200 BC and the other from about 1300 BC, a very rare Viking strap-end that probably came from Norway, and a small twisted ring which may be linked to the strap-end. According to the officials, the items might have been discovered at three different sites, possibly with illegal use of a metal detector without a licence. The museum asks the discoverer to come forward to inform the museum about the circumstances of the finds.
