The cannon was found by a dredging company under contract with the Army Corps of Engineers. The artefact was recovered ear the property boundary between Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site and the Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point, North Carolina, USA.

The cannon was found in a river, about a mile and a half out from the historic site of Brunswick Town. The artefact was uncovered and is currently wrapped in burlap and under a light water spray to keep it wet, at Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson awaiting conservation efforts. The weapon measures 2.3 metres long and appears to have burst, possibly caused by a casting flaw. The bore is 2.3-metres and 10 centimetres in diameter, which could equate to a 6- to 9-pound gun. It appears also to have been in use prior to 1756.

Few features were found on the surface. They include a chunk of the muzzle missing. The gun was also found empty, which is an indicator that the cannon could have burst while being fired.
