In the past, archaeologists discovered numerous remains of animals during excavations in the Colosseum, the Flavian Amphitheatre built between 70-80 AD. But this skull was the most recent find, made as the researchers were cleaning the area around the steps to the monument’s basement. It is believed to date to between 12th-13th century AD. In this period the Colosseum was turned into a fortified structure by its owners, the Frangipani family. Further analysis is scheduled to reveal any crucial information that the artefact might hold, including what the skull was doing in the ancient amphitheatre.
