19th cent. trenches discovered in New Zealand

Construction workers discovered military tranches dating back to the 19th century near Tauranga, in the Bay of Plenty area of the Island of New Zealand.

Excavation at the site (by Radio New Zealand)

The discovery was made during widening State Highway 29a in Matapihi for a safety median barrier. The trench is about 40m long and appears to have been used as a coastal defence around the 1830s to 1860s. According to archaeologists, it is located away from other well-known battle sites around Tauranga.
