Ancient tombs discovered by illegal excavations

An open tomb dated to the late antiquity was found at the Akkaya site in the Ula district of Muğla province, west Turkey. The tomb was found by the village chief as it was left after illegal excavations.

Gendarmerie, notified about the find, secured the site as the experts carried out excavations by the tomb. It was identified to be ancient but its precise age is yet to be determined. Further excavations are planned in the region in the upcoming days. Meanwhile, gendarmerie units launched operations against suspects, who carried out unauthorized excavations in the same area last week. This investigation ended in three individuals beign arrested and equippement being seized, including a metal detector, dowser, hammer, and digging tools. Police officers were able to seize four objects, three lamps and a tear bottle considered to be historical artifacts.
