Hoard of Viking silver discovered

A metal detectorist discovered a significant hoard of 14 fragments of silver arm-rings, believed to date back to 10th century AD, in the Garff area of Island of Man.

The discovery was made between June and December 2016, but it was only recently revealed after closer examination. The exact place of the discovery is undisclosed due to the need of protection the integrity of the site. The arm-rings were high-status artefacts worn as a sign of wealth. The armbands were an obvious statement of wealth and were also used as currency before coinage was adopted. According to the experts, this is the first such find in the area, possibly attesting to much potential activity during the Viking age.
