Archaeologists have uncovered 5000-year old stone tools in Moscow, Russia, during the city’s ongoing construction works in a project set to renovate pedestrian zones.
Researchers have discovered a cutting tool dating to the Neolithic at the Sretenka Street site, and a fragment of a scraper from the Mesolithic on Pokrovsky Boulevard. The latter dates back to 7000 BC. According to archaeologists these finds indicate that the area was inhabited by people long before the present city was built. However it is assumed that the artefacts might have been found in a secondary context, and that they have at some point penetrated the much older cultural layers 400 or 500 years ago during previous construction works.
