After previous failed attempts researchers have uncovered the main telegraph of RMS Lusitania from the wreck, resting off the Head of Kinsale, County Cork, Ireland.

The operation was conducted after recreational divers licensed by the Irish Ministry of Culture located the telegraph and marked its position on the sea bed. After consultation between specialists the artefact was brought to surface. This is the second telegraph recovered from RMS Lusitania, after the previous one having been salvaged from the ocean bed in October last year. Researchers state that the telegraph is undamaged and in excellent condition, and is planned to be display in a local museum, along with its pedestal and other artefacts recovered during earlier dives by the individuals who found it.

RMS Lusitania was a British ocean liner launched in 1906. After making 202 trans-Atlantic crossings it was sunk by German submarine in 1915 during World War I. The ship was briefly the world’s largest passenger ship. The sinking caused  causing a major diplomatic uproar and protests in the United States, due to 128 American citizens being among the dead. The sinking helped shift public opinion in the USA against Germany, and was a factor in the declaration of war by the United States in 1917.
