Ancient tombs discovered on Cyprus

Roadworks in the community of Deneia in Nicosia, Cyprus, led to discovery of ancient tombs dating to the fifth century BC.

The area where the tombs were discovered is filled with ancient sites and the antiquities department had been notified before digging began in case anything valuable was underneath. According to Christakis Panayiotou, a local community leader, the tombs appear not to have been raided by tomb robbers. Archaeologists called to the site discovered two classical chambers and a tomb of unknown type, for the Deneia area. In the past in that area a cemetery with around 250 tombs dating back to the bronze age has also been discovered.
