Tonnes of coins discovered under house

A villager rebuilding his house discovered an ancient treasure of 5.6 tonnes of coins in Chacun, Jingdezhen city, Jiangxi Province, East China.

The coins were discovered as the individual started rebuilding his old home. According to the locals, the place of discovery belonged to a landlord more than 1000 years ago. Archaeologists called at the site uncovered around 5.6 tons of ancient coins, nearly 300000 pieces in total. The coins could be dated back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279), making the coins more than 800 years old. According to Feng Ruqin, curator of Fuliang Museum, the follow-up work, including rust cleaning, weighing and categorizing, as well as academic research of these coins, will take two or three years.
