Local villagers unearthed an ancient Mayan artefact while clearing debris on privately-owned land in the city of Suchiapa, Chiapas, Mexico.
The stone sculpture is believed to represent the head of the Mayan god of maize and abundance. Experts have dated the artefact to the late classical period between 600-900 AD. The artefact was discovered in September 2016 and has been kept and studied at the Regional Museum of Chiapas.
